What is a multi-straand V-belt?

A multi-strand V-belt, also known as a multiple belt, is a belt made up of several V-belts. These individual V-belts are joined together in parallel by a strong connecting band. This means that the width, height and length of each strand is identical, but the total width is different. As the name suggests, this is a V-belt that uses several rubber strands to generate power and transfer it to the pulleys. This shape means greater reliability, load capacity and strength. In fact, a more uniform distribution of tension enables the machine to operate at higher speeds and with less noise.

What are the different types of multi-straand V-belts?

Multi-strand V-belts can be composed of several smooth V-belts or several toothed V-belts. The main multi-strand belts on offer are as follows:

Smooth V-belts :

  • section "A" (13 mm x 8 mm)
  • section "B" (17 mm x 11 mm)
  • C" section (22 mm x 14 mm)
  • SPZ" section (9.7 mm x 8 mm)
  • SPA" section (12.7 mm x 10 mm)
  • SPB" section (16.3 mm x 13 mm)
  • section "SPC" (22 mm x 18 mm)
  • 3V" section (9 mm x 8 mm)
  • 5V" section (15 mm x 13 mm)
  • 8V" section (25 mm x 23 mm)

Raw edge cogged V-belts :

  • XPZ" cross-section (9.7 mm x 8 mm)
  • XPA" section (12.7 mm x 10 mm)
  • XPB" section (16.3 mm x 13 mm)
  • XPC" section (22 mm x 18 mm)
  • 3VX" section (9 mm x 8 mm)
  • 5VX" section (15 mm x 13 mm)

Generally, the number of strands is indicated just before the "classic" reference of the smooth or notched V-belt. For example, 3-3V1250 is a smooth V-belt with a "3V" section and 3 strands.

How to choose a multi-strand V-belt?

When choosing this V-belt, it's important to take into account the part number on the original one. If no reference is visible, it's necessary to take the dimensions. To determine the dimensions, you'll need a caliper to measure the cross-section (height x width) of one strand. Once you've determined the cross-section, you'll need to measure its inside and/or outside length. To do this, you can use a messlat or tape measure. Once these dimensions have been taken, all you need to do is identify the number of strands required.
