What is a self aligning roller bearing?

The self aligning roller bearing has an inner ring, two rows of rollers, with the cage that holds them in place, and an outer ring. The inner ring consists of two races in continuous grooves and a spherical race on the outer ring. This design is ideal for applications where shaft misalignment may occur. The self-aligning properties of this bearing ensure correct positioning, reduced friction and reduced noise and vibration. These bearings have a high radial load capacity at high speeds.

What are the different types of self aligning roller bearings?

This product group is available with both cylindrical and tapered bores, as well as open and sealed. Bearings with a tapered bore are identified by a "K" in the order number. For example: 22208-EK-SKF. These products are fitted with an adapter sleeve to facilitate installation by locking the bearing to the shaft.

The sealed bearings, with integrated seals, are lubricated with grease. The lubrication is "guaranteed for life" and requires no maintenance. The seals are made of NBR and can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C.

Unsealed bearings are mainly composed of a cage (holding the rollers) made of steel, but it can also be made of polyamide. Steel cages have a low carbon content. This material provides high strength by reducing friction and wear. Polyamide cages combine strength and elasticity.

How to choose a self aligning roller bearing?

As with other bearings, it is necessary to know its inner diameter, outer diameter and thickness. The second factor to consider is the environment in which it will be used. The last factor to consider is the technical characteristics of the product. This means determining the type of bore and the radial internal clearance of the bearing. These products are available with a normal clearance, a lower clearance (C2), a higher clearance (C3) or a higher clearance (C4).
